I'm about to implement cardio right after waking as it's obviously an efficient way to target fat stores as fuel. My question is: Will drinking a protein shake mixed with water before doing my cardio interfere with burning fat? I'll most likely be drinking a shake around 5-6 am and going back to sleep until around 9 at which point I'll possibly drink another shake mixed with water and immediately do my cardio. I just want to make sure fat will still be the primary fuel source instead of the protein I just took in. Thanks in advance.

as long as it is just a protein shake it is a good idea. just check the carb content.

If that's just the carbs from the whey. You should be fine.

Exactly - protein in the am prior to cardio will ensure muscle isn't lost.

i dont think cardio is giong to wreck any muscle on empty stomach. the extra 45 min of not eating from say a 8hr fast is going to negligible and the muscle lost will be just as minimal. depending on what cardio you are doing it could be more beneficial to do on empty stomach.
if your consuming whey it will be rapidly absorbed and converted for fuel. your body is not as simple as people make it out to be. unless you are starving yourself for days your body isnt going to eat itself

I flat out disagree Pills. When the body is looking for energy, it's going to burn what it needs to burn to sustain itself.

I would assume that most eat a meal before bed, so there's not really an 8-hour fast. Further, metabolism drops significantly during sleep which requires less energy. Getting up first thing to go put one's body into an energy burning state consistently is probably going to cause muscle loss. The significance of this is debatable, but I would agree with you when saying it won't be a great deal of muscle loss without the shake.

Regardless, why would we disagree on taking in 20grams of whey, maybe 100 calories total cals with fat and carbs included, which won't be stored as fat and ensure that there is no muscle loss?

body will use what it needs for energy and you think its going to choose muscle first?? are you kidding me? your body isnt retarded. its not going to break anything down to do a few hours work, esepcially if you eat afterwards. your concept of time and how the body utilizes nutrients is skewed.

unless dude is in single (lower single) bf % its a waste. i can assure you his body is not hurting after fasting from sleep. this is what your body is made to do, it has been engineered this way for millions of years. people are fucking bat shit crazy when it comes to their protein shake (yes i am included as currently all but maybe 1 or 2 of my meals are liquid, but thats out of convenience) his body has more than enough glycogen and fats ready to be used for fuel. why waste a shake when you can use same energy you already have stored??

I experimented with this exact topic. I didn't notice any difference in fat loss when I drank a protein shake before am cardio. I felt a bit better during the cardio though.

liftsiron is a fictional character and should be taken as such.

It is like all energy .
It goes down the path of least resistance for all it's requirements.

while it is a truism that if you eat less and exercise more you will lose weight there are factors that do come into play to shift thing one way or the other. it is also true that these strategies really are more noticeable when you are lower bodyfat. personally i like to take bcaas prior to aerobics since it is experimentally noted that bcaas help to prevent muscle turnover in a fasted state, i also like to exercise in a fasted state since it is also experimentally noted that the body preferentially burns fat in the absence of carbs. at the end of the day how much difference does it actually make? i will leave that to the individual to decide, for me, it makes a difference if i am consistent and dedicated. there is also the control factor, some of us, maybe even most of us like to think that they are in control of the process and are doing things that will optimize the process. of course there are always those that say, "just shut up and just do it and you will lose the weight!" motivation is always an important factor.

The body is going to utilize the most efficient method of attaining the energy that it needs. I never said that it would use muscle first. It seems as if you are trying to say that the body will use carbs first, fats second and muscle last. The body actually burns all 3 simultaneously, just at varying percentages based or many factors such as exercise intensity and "energy availability."

To say the body won't use protein for fuel whatsoever is a falsehood. How much muscle will be used is debatable. Further, how did you arrive at a "few hours" of work? If the cardio is consistent, the total time is much greater.

I appreciate the assurance, but it doesn't provide me the comfort that I need to risk my investment.

this is what your body is made to do, it has been engineered this way for millions of years.

The body is designed to use the least amount of energy as possible (and we've also gotta mention the fun part: reproduce). The vast majority of bodies are not engineered to hold any more muscle than is absolutely necessary due to its goal of conserving energy.

This doesn't describe me. I don't believe in huge amounts of protein taken ingested at once or throughout a day. 1 gram per pound divided into as many meals as possible is plenty in my opinion.

Where's the waste? Wasted money on protein or wasted energy on exercise?

So you want to drop some pounds?....3 words...."Super Cutter Diet".......

Look it up on the forum and follow the weekly protocal for 4 to 6 week (not over a heavy volume block) and you will drop your fat.

Here:
http://www.cuttingedgemuscle.com/Fo...ighlight=cutter

It is a challenge to stick with and never cheat....but you will be happy you did. On a weekly basis your body is drawn to a state where carbs are slightly depleted and the "path of least resistance" turns out to be fat. I too do the early AM training thing and have done so in combination with JGUNS Super Cutter and (so long as you do NOT cheat) there are great results to be had. (completed 5 weeks....on 3 different occasions...big change!)

Sometimes I had the craving to just eat something...anything...so I would plate up a small bowl of salad with 2 egg whites cut up on top and a little sea salt with balsimic viniger.

I should stress once more that this is NOT a protocal to use during any sort of big volume block as you will end up feeling drained and down.

Please don't spare protien in order to drop fat!?!!?...you will have poor reco and possably end up feeling sore allot.

Have a look...good luck.

Cheers,
G/L

Regardless of how hard you train - The time is going to go by anyway so if you are going to throw a leg over your bike you may aswell bust you ass, make as many watts / do as many intervals as you can.

wasted money. yes your body will use whatever it will for energy... that being said what ultimately decides this is hormone levels. the body does not burn all three macros evenly. yes body will not hold more muscle than necessary, thats why its important to make damn sure what you have is necessary. if you brain thinks whatever your holding is going to kill you if you drop it, then it will keep muscle.
also i didnt say it wouldn t use protein or aminos, i was saying its going to start tearing apart fibers in your rear delt just so you can walk up a flight of stairs. you have quite a bit of energy just hanging around your body waiting to be used, this includes all three macros. unless youve starved yourself for days your body wont be breaking anything down.
anyway at the end of the day what ultimately decides every facet of what people train for; muscle mass, fat loss, strength, etc... is determined by hormones.
