Has anyone ever considered doing one. I am soo sluggish and feel like shit all the time. Sometimes I get constant muscle contractions in the toes and legs. I am assuming it may be from excessive fats and bad foods. So I was going to do a detox diet. I will use normal minerals and all. I will not do any of that stuff seen on TV!
I want to detox the liver kidneys lungs, cells, etc. I figure a vegan diet for a few weeks with all the right vitamins and minerals should get me going again to where i at least want to do something besides drink and watch TV.
I have gained a massive amount of Fat over the course of a few years of this lifestyle. I was lean and fairly large at that time. I suddenly lost all interest in working out and this is what happened.
So I figure if I do a detox diet for a bit then attempt to go clean with everything ( and stop drinking). I could get myself back together.
By the way I am 50 and weight in at.........285. With probably well opver 26 % Bodyfat.

a good physical with blood work would help you to establish some immediate and long term goals. Good to hear that you are taking your health seriously again.

I have had a few physicals done less than 6 months ago. I found to have low Testosterone and slightly elevated cholesterol readings. Other than that they said I was in good shape except for being overweight.
I actually used to give out advice for weight loss and weight training, but over the years have forgotten it.
I guess I am going to go the vegan way with circuit training and cardio at least 3 days a week to start, Need to force myself.
I will eat plain fish though with the diet for protein. and use whey after working out.
That means no sugar no wheats. only healthy fats....... Yecch this is gonna suck!
I actually did this once before but I was in my twenties when I did it.

i never quite understood what people mean by "detox"

are we implying that there are just loads of toxins wandering around in our bodies fouling up things constantly? I just don't think that is the case. You get the best detox system in the world & it runs 24/7... the liver & kidneys. They are the bomb shizzle.

starving yourself for a day is absolutely ludicrous. I never understood the point of a "detox" If you have in fact built up toxins (from excess free radicals, alcohol, drugs, etc) you had better believe it takes YEARS not 24 hours to get rid of. The reason people do these things and feel "detoxed" is they lose 8-12 lbs of water weight in a day and they feel lighter, less bloated, and "flushed."

Also, fasting is a sure way to lose muscle; this is not theory, this has been shown in studies countless times. Additionally, specifically the first week of a fast you lose most muscle of any other time. You see after a few weeks your body adapts to burning ketones and actually begins to spare muscle tissue for survival and will hold onto the muscle until darn near the point of death before it starts to utilize it for fuel again. However it is the beginning weeks of a fast that is highly catabolic. Not only that; but you put the weight right back on, and typically results show that you put on a greater proportion of fat mass to lean mass.

There is a classic study on this very topic by Waterlow I believe called "Starvation in Man"

So why in the hell would you fast for 24 hours, which is the MOST catabolic time of a fast to begin with?

But that's just me

Oh and a day of not eating will make me lose what? 1 OZ
Come on layne get real.
I am detoxing my liver and kidneys, what is wrong with that?As for dieting I have done vegan before with no ill affects. Cleans me out and makes me feel more alive. Maybe instead of putting it dwon ( as you seem to do alot of) Try it first before you condemn it.
I am planning on detoxing for more than a week.

protein synthesis drops up to 30% in 8 hours of fasting, stretch that out to 24 hours. You'll lose quite a bit more than an ounce.

certain nutrient s actually will aid in the detox of the organs along with the supps I will use.
If you spent the last 5 years binge drinking and eating shit you would do this as well.
you are what 22 or something like that I remember, wait, time can change. Life can change.
Layne you have no clue, it is rough to feel sick all the time and feel fat. when years back you were lean.
But I am not going to argue with you like we used to do. so I will leave it at that

Just reduce your carbs, supplement for the high cholesterol, and get active in the gym again with an emphasis on cardio.
I think that's why ppl let themselves get outa shape. It don't have to be torture just make some lifestyle adjustments. Of course, weight training should be torture.

Follow up
I used the diet for 2 weeks and feel good from it. I have a bit of energy from it.
I figure with all the stuff in the air and food and water, it may be good to do this a few times a year. I lost a few pounds during the process and stopped feeling bloated.
Now on to my regular diet and weight loss.
