Take care if you use this drug.

Ann Emerg Med. 2007 Apr 4; [Epub ahead of print]Toxicity From the Use of Niacin to Beat Urine Drug Screening.Mittal MK, Florin T, Perrone J, Delgado JH, Osterhoudt KC.
Division of Emergency Medicine, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA (Mittal, Osterhoudt); Department of Pediatrics (Mittal, Florin, Osterhoudt).

Niacin (vitamin B3) is promoted for rapidly clearing the body of drugs of abuse, such as cocaine and cannabis, and is alleged to interfere with urine drug screening. We present 4 cases of such novel use associated with significant adverse effects. Two cases had isolated skin manifestations, whereas the other 2 presented with life-threatening manifestations, including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, hepatotoxicity, metabolic acidosis, and hypoglycemia evolving into hyperglycemia. One patient also had profound neutrophilia and QT(C)-interval prolongation. All patients improved after cessation of the drug use and supportive treatment. Health care providers should be aware of these potential adverse effects of niacin and of the misguided use of this vitamin by patients seeking to interfere with urine drug screening.

I wonder what the doses are that are used for trying to mask a drug test? I remember back in my younger days all the talk was about golden seal root for the same thing.

I guess I should qualify my first statement as it sounds like I'm wanting to beat a drug test...Not the case, but I do take niacin (flush free) for cholesterol. I'm assuming it's much less than is taken to beat tests. At least I HOPE!

i know when taking large doses of niacin for raising your hdl, they recommend taking an aspirin 30 min prior to help with the flushing effect. i might be useful in this case if it did not somehow interfere with the masking.

I normally only take on tab a day in conjunction with my other supp's for cholesterol. Are others taking more? The flush free kind has done just what it promises...No flushing for me!

unfortunately the science is not there for flush free. time release niacin although not quite as effective as regualr niacin is a close second. I take it at night (see the research) 30 min after an aspirin to reduce the chance of flushing. works like a charm. I am up to the sweet spot of 2 grams a night but my hdl was very low.

yes it can, i would only recommend it if you have low hdl along with high ldl. SInce you really need more than a gram a day to achieve good results for most i would make sure that you have access to blood tests to monitor your liver function.

Aaahh shit...Scratch the niacin then for this feller. I was doing pretty good improving my lipids with just coq-10, polycosinol, fish oils and oatmeal. Think I'll just leave it at that. I've always been real paranoid about my liver...All those damn years living in Kentucky took a toll on my liver no doubt! LOL!
