Originally posted by Skip I should probably be a bit more clear when I say that I advocate for fast acting carbs during a loading phase. I am speaking of a loading phase before a show, primarily. When I refer to someone being severely depleted, I am simply speaking in relative terms. I consider being severely depleted the last week before a show as opposed to when you are depleted at, say, the 3 or 4 week mark. Just my opinion but....... Skip I am enjoying this conversation Skip and thanks for taking the time to talk to me. We may be talking a little bit of apples and oranges here because, in part, you are talking about contest prep, so I am only indirectly responding in a sense......and NOT placing words in your mouth as to generalizations or what I actually think you may be saying......Fair enough as to the loading phase before a show and I am aware of the pro and con arguments as to the type(s) of loading that should occur.....and I will leave that to your area of expertise, trop's and others here as I don't do shows......but my suspicion is (and I may be wrong) that most that hit this site don't do shows either....I should have been a bit more clear (apologies for that) that I was approaching this issue more from the standpoint of the average joe who just goes to the gym as much as he can to try to build muscle and hopefully have some definition along with it........under these conditions as to long-term nutrition I simply cannot see the suitability of simple or even complex high glycemic carbs (unless your body's genetics can tolerate it) on a daily basis or even in portions of a bulking phase (notwithstanding carb starvation/overloading patterns that seem to work for those that have a certain percentage of bodyfat and under) with the exception of post-workout/sometimes pre-workout...................Outside of the loading phase issue, post-workout, etc., the comments about individuals who may "erroneously" think that high-gylcemic carbs are bad for them because they may have listened to others without any real experience on their part.....I think that may be (and again I may be wrong) a bit unfair.....it's true that a number of individuals bs on this site about things they don't know anything about (I love the one that told me meat didn't lose any of its fat content because when the drippings hit the hot coals the fat went back into the meat), but most of us have experienced problems with fat and water retention (other than AS it seems to me diet-fat/water/retention/reduction seem to be the number one topic here) and most have played around with it with various diets......and what I have seen here, what I have seen for myself, guys I work out with, studies that I've looked at and the friends that I have given dietary advice to is that low-glycemic complex carbs on average are more effective in the "dual" role of increasing muscle mass and controlling fat.......and heathier to boot........but again, if you compete, which may necessitate different types of loading and/or if your genetics allow to load differently.......fine......I wish I had those "problems"....... All I see is as far as what you can and can't eat, how much muscle you can build, and ultimately how good you look on the stage, genetics DO matter.....almost everyone I talk to even those that clearly have great genetics, either say theirs is bad or they wish theirs was better no matter how good they look......so everyone is going to say they have bad genetics or theirs is not so good regardless of what the case is....It seems to me that most just want to posit the issue in the extreme of just having good or bad genetics and I disagree with that.......there are a lot of us that are inbetweeners......I know that someone that works hard and does the right things can beat out someone that is more genetically gifted and lazy, but what I see in the gym is where everything else is equal- diet, work habits, whathaveyou, better genetics wins out every time and it is these individuals that have a "tendency" to look better in the gym, go to more contests and win more contests........that doesn't stop me from working my ass off, but it certainly makes me look more critically at my diet......among other things......in a non-contest sense that is....have a good day Skip and lay off the hagen daz......hehe........peace [email protected]

Taking exogenous insulin with sufficient carbs is the most effective way to replenish glycogen stores, removing the need for a longer carbing up period. This shouldn't be overused however, due to problems with fat gain. Also, insulin is very dangerous (I'm sure you already know this).
