I am 5’11” and weigh 285 lbs. But I am mostly muscle, meaning I am probably 60 lbs overweight. Most of the fat seems to be in my gut. I am trying to lose about 60 lbs in 4-6months. Some people may say this in unrealistic but I am up for the challenge. To accomplish this I am planning on eating high protein/low carb diet at about 1500 calories a day, along with 30 mins of cardio a day. Please give me some advice as to if this is a realistic goal.

60 lb is very realalistic in a 4-6 motnh period.
Whats your BMR?
you can't lose weight untill you know how many Kcals it takes to live.?
30 minutes of cardio is skimping in my opinion.
Study after study has proven that resistance training coupled w/ cardio will produce better physical gains and wanted fat loss.
my bmr is 2750, when i ride @ LT i burn 23.2 kcals a minute.
So even when i am trying to drop weight i can eat 3000 calories a day if i wouk out for an hour giving me a net defficet of around 700 calories.
YOu can't base your caloric intake @ a steady 1500 calories a day.
What if you train or ride for 2 hours?
You need to adjust your caloric intake accordingly.
NVR NVR restrict caloric intake PWO.
EVER
you can restore approx 80% of your depleted glycogen stores(ATP) w/ in 2 hours of ending your workout.
After that your uptake is approx 5% per hour./
So if you miss that first 2 hours it will be IMPOSSIBLE for your energy stores to be full before your next workout the following day, which will obviously result in feeling lathergic and rundown.
If you go on a diet you're going to gain the weight back.
Wanna know why?
If you go on a diet....you have to come off the diet, then the wieght comes back
You have to change the ay you live and change the way you eat.
It's alifestyle.
I struggle w/ it every year w. riding.
Every cyclist in here knows that that extra lb of fat he has on is just more watage he has to generate to go uphill and the same rate.
I hope this helps.
lemme know how i can help

it doesn't matter what you eat, just eat clean.
YOu have mcdonalds or pizza once or twice a week, just don;t go overboard.
You need to reward yourself.
if you expend more calories then you ingest you will lose weight.
It's impossible not to.
Good Luck!

Why the decision to drop your caloric intake so low right away? I would start tapering it down or your metabolism is going to screech to a halt because your body thinks you are starving. 1,500/day is way low for someone of your size in my opinion.

Definitely low on the caloric intake imo. you could do 2500 and pull 30 mins of cardio a day and drop a lot of weight. Like swole said you will throw yourself into a starvation mode and your body will not drop weight. Remember to adjust your caloric intake as you drop weight because you burn less calories per day the lighter you are. That is why you will struggle to drop the last 10 or so pounds. Some YHcl and caffeine would be a good addition prior to cardio. Dont go straight to 1500 Cal though.

I agree with GS and HD a rule of thump to get ripped is 10 times your bodyweight in calories. So start at approx 2800 per day as you become lighter lower your daily calorie intake to meet 10Xbwt. in pounds. I would go with ratios approx 50-60% protein 30-35% carbs and keep fats under 15% of total calorie intake. Carbs and protein=4 cals per gram fats=9 calories. 1500 calories would lower your metabolism to ziltch and I believe that you would burn buco lean muscle for fuel.

liftsiron is a fictional character and should be taken as such.

I am also of the opinion that you can lose bodyfat by simply adjusting the macronutrient ratios with minimal caloric deficit. Especially in the initial stages of the diet. 1500kcal/day would be on the low side for a 5'11" female.

Lastly, your goal is definitely a realistic goal in my mind. I healthy rate of weight loss in the average person is 1.5-3lbs./week depending on your body composition. You, being on the obese side, would clearly be at the upper end of that, especially for the first 3 months. I think you are definitely taking steps in the right direction and 5 months, being about 20 weeks, would put you in about the 40-60lbs. range.

Contrary to the prior post, I also feel that 30 min. of cardio a day is a great start for someone in your situation.

If you want to try extreme calorie cutting diets, i suggest you check out www.bodyrecomposition.com and a diet known as PSMF and purchase the Rapid Weight Loss Handbook.

I basically agree with what swole said in his post. To build on that I owuld suggest Taking in about 350-400g protein. The carbs initially I would start at somewhere around 185g. I would throw in around 90-100g from good fats (at least 15 of which should be from fish oils (I like smart blend or flame out)). For your carbs I would eat most of them first thing in the morning and after your workout use whats left as needed for energy throughout the day. Also a few minor tidbits to help, lemon in your water before meals and balsamic dressing during meals. (Lemon will create a better enviornment for protein digestion and balsamic can adjust the glycemic index of the carbs eaten by as much as 20%)

agreed with above, start at 2500 cals or so and adjust from there. 30 min of cardio is OK but 60min 5 days a week would be a lot better. IMO bcaas before and after training is the key to NOT losing muscle mass while dieting. as you drop weight you will have to drop your total caloric intake to reflect your untimate goals. very doable.

I've been using Liftsiron's methods for a month now and it has worked really well for me. I shoot for 60%P, 30%C, 10%F. I used to do super calorie restricted diets, they do and will drop weight as well as muscle and strength. Doing as LI suggest with diet combined with weight training and cardio as otheres have suggested works great. I am not only loosing weight but getting stronger as well. In my own experience the 60lb is not unrealistic in 6 months. I think that another helpful part of the equation is good suppliments, there is a tremdous amount of information here on this subject to not only help with burning fat but saving muscle as well.
Good Luck
