Since I workout in Malaysia, and NOBODY knows how to spot, I train every person I ask for a spot, no matter how many times they've spotted for me before. The conversation goes something like this: 250: So, I don't want you touching the bar. You're only here to stop me from dying. Spotter: Ok. No problem. 250: Let me make this absolutely clear. Unless the word "spot" comes out of my mouth, don't touch the bar. Spotter: Sure. 250: So what are you going to do if the bar is pressing down on me, I'm barely breathing, and I'm starting to turn purple? Spotter: I'll take the bar. 250 (glaring): No. You're going to laugh at me and wait for me to say "spot". Clear? Spotter (looking nervous): Maybe you should get someone else... I agree that there is nothing more frustrating than fighting with a maximal weight and having someone jump in to "help" you. Unfortunately, my gym is filled with people who "load up the bar" to 135 for bench, and then have their friends do upright rows while they go through the motions of benching. What makes me even crazier is that this type of "training" is endorsed by the gym trainers. Although this is not a surprise, since the main criteria for being a trainer at my gym seems to be "Do you own a blue t-shirt?"

You left the gym for 20 minutes because someone did not spot you properly :biglaugh: Boy, you are fucked. Stay away from roids dude, I can't stop laughing 😀

well dude I hate spots that take 10 seconds to get the damn rep up. Sure, I would love to get that extra work out of it, but not at the expense of a possible injury. This is coming from someone who was injured (shoulder) on bench while being spotted by the spot you say you desire. Since then I tell people to yank it if I stall. It aint worth it. i will just do another set if I need to work harder. Bottom line is, you should always tell your spotter HOW you want to be spotted. Not everyone will know to do it just how you want it, or as you probably say, the RIGHT way. Seriously, though, you are way too focused on how much you bench if that ruined your workout and made you take 20 minutes to calm down.

I usually lift weights in the morning but lately I have been lifting weights in the late afternoons. It’s a completely different environment lifting more towards the evenings. In the mornings I see a more fitness orientated crowd, people scribbling in journals, and looking like they are interested in themselves. In the evenings I see younger people walking around with tight shirts lifting heavy weights in poor form with an attitude that it’s a masculinity or popularity test. Some people need to lighten up. As for the guy who wanted to fight over a set ... hey its just a little exercise.

Hey, I might die, but I'd die a happy man knowing that a Malaysian had actually learned how to follow directions...

All I can say is you come across as a stupid man, and I advise the poster not to interact with others in hopes of increasing time before inevidable incarceration.

when i ask for a spot, i explain what i want from them the same way i would explain it to a 4 year old. I dont want any confusion so i break it down SLOW!!!! For me.. I just tell them.. watch my 1st couple reps and just make sure all my reps stay at the same pace... once that shit freezes on you is when you are liable to get hurt. but point is i make it clear to them that I am not at a weight that i need help right from the start.. and that they only need to help me last rep or two... and i break it down to them in plain english a couple times if i have to. dont get mad at some guy for trying to help you
