Injury...recommendations? Experience?

Hey Fellers...Think I might have a problem. I've had this nagging right shoulder pain for the past couple of weeks. Because of it, I've been taking it really easy while working the chest and shoulders. When I went to the gym today it felt like I had gotten better, but as soon as I started working chest, BOTH my shoulders were in pain.

Long story short, my chiro is telling me that I most likely pulled tendons or muscles near my collar bone and clavicle? (I think). Either way, anyone else been through this? Can I still work out with very high reps and low weight to keep the muscle stimulated? Or should I just rest all together for a while? I really, REALLY hate the idea of no excercise at all, but, I'll do what I gotta do to get back to the gym as quick as possible.

He's also telling me lots of icing them, and he ordered me some electro-muscle stimulation deal to help contract the muscle...Insurance covers it.

I'm guessing I shouldn't be pushing as hard now that I'm "off"?

Thoughts?

Better go lighter, have a MRI exam in order to check in you have an injury in the soft tissues, and do some external rotation exercises (3 sets of 15 reps 3 times per week, do it light but go for the burn).

Switch to DBs. They take so much stress off my shoulders. See how you feel while doing a set. If it's too much, you gotta stop. I hear ya, though. I know it blows taking time off.

What kind of pain are we talking about specifically? I have had so many shoulder issues lately, it's ridiculous. I can probably be of some help however you need to pinpoint just how severe the injury is and what is causing it. The shoulder joint itself is so dynamic.

I've been almost exclusively dumbells for quite a while now. After looking at some anatomy charts of the shoulder, it definately feels like it's in the rotator cuff or ac joint on the right arm. The right hurts to sleep on at night, and gets pretty painful even with regular activity like putting on a seat belt.

The other day when I was lifting, however, it felt like the bones in my outer shoulder wanted to pop through the skin ON BOTH SIDES! Am I falling apart already? Geez, I'm only 36!

Sounds to me like you need to definitely go light, if you're going to work out at all.

I was about to say DB's.

it it hurts do NOT work thru the pain, you will just cause a chronic condition. Seek professional help, the shoulder is a complex joint and you will speed your recovery by getting approrpriate medical attention. When i screwed up my shoulder with bicepital tendonitis i tried to work thru the pain and ending up having issues for years. I finally got referred to the red sox team therapist ( love these hmo's) and got appriate treatment a reasonable advice. When you rehab shoulder i would definitely consider DBs, i use them now almost exclusively except for heavies.

Just got back from Dr...He says I've aggravated the tendons over the AC joint and that it's probably one of the most common shoulder injuries for those that are into lifting weights. He has given me a weeks worth of Celebrex to alleviate the inflamation and told me to stop lifting for at least a week.

THEN, went to my chiro, and he got my insurance company to cover the cost of a TEMS unit, which is this electrical muscle stimulator deal. He is saying that it will help speed up the recovery process...Time will tell, and I'll let you guys know!

Thanks everyone for your responses! I LOVE this board!
