Well it's been a pretty shitty day bro's. I recently had allergy testing done and they prescribed shots for me. I went in to my doctor's office today for my first shot. I waited around about 10 minutes to make sure I didn't have a reaction and then the nurse said I could take off. About 10 mins after that my eyes puffed up making it hard to see and my chest tightened up making it hard to breath. I went to the ER and they put me on an IV and gave be Benadryl. I'm trying to figure out why this happened and can only think of three reasons: 1. Nurse gave me too much (he was having a hard time figuring out proper vial to use as vials varied in dose). 2. He fucked up and went intra-muscular instead of subcutaneous. This is what I think happened. I expected him to pinch some skin and then inject, but he went right into the delt. He said the needle was small enough that it wouldn't go into the muscle. I think it was a 5/8 though and I am a slim guy.... 3. My body just doesn't react well to the shots and I can't go on them. Anyone else have a bad reaction to allergy shots?

Sounds like just a bad reaction to the shot. It probably means you need to stay away from allergy shots in the future.

Bro sorry to hear that!! Do you know if you are allergic to what they gave you? Did the doc ask you?? The reason I say this a similar thing happened to a guy I know and after the shot the nurse left the room, and then they came back in and he was all jacked up..Eyes, hard to breathe..It turns out he was allergic to the allergy shot...

Thanks EatNphood, I believe the way allergy shots work is they give you a small dose of what you are allergic to. The hope is that by exposing your immune system to the allergin, you will build up a tolerance and eventually stop reacting to it. I'm allergic to dust mites, mold, pollen, etc. Some reaction is normal, but mine was severe.

How long have you been having the allergy shots? The risk is always there that your body will build up a level of the serum that will cause anaphylaxis (reaction anaphyactic shock). Could happen the first time, could happen the 101st time. Remember, that shot is a small amount of what your are allergic to. Doubtful, if you are still alive, that it went IV. Possible , although doubtful, you got to much. Ask to check the Nurses note that was recorded in your chart. It will list the amount. ALso, JCAHO guidelines require that you would have been told if you either had an IM shoot or the wrong amount delivered. Get a copy of your chart and see what the Doc listed as a reason for this. Don't just blow off the allergy shots as the rebound effect can make things worse. I['m an RN with immunization and allergy experience. I have also gone into anaphylactic shock during a "scratch test". Above all...check your chart to see what was written up about this.
